During late mediaeval times it was ground into a powder to make ultramarine, the finest of all pigments, which was used by leading artists of the Renaissance and Baroque, such as Michelangelo who, while painting the Sistine Chapel, ordered vast quantities of lapis lazuli to depict the blues of heaven due to its vivid colour and which is now one of the most exquisite examples of lapis pigment used by an artist.
